In our classroom, we like to have the students draw self-portraits three or four times during the school year. Not only is it super cute for parents to see how their child's drawing skills have progressed, but it also helps kids begin to understand spatial awareness and encourages attention to detail.
We ask the kids to look in the mirror and suggest they pay attention to the colour of their hair, skin, eyes, and lips. Most young kids will choose their favourite colour of crayon rather than think about the colour of the body part they are drawing. The teachers gently encourage the kids to choose colours that are closest to what they see in the mirror, while still allowing creative expression.

This project is also a fantastic way to start talking about how all people look different and recognizing facial expressions.
