Salt Dough Fossils Craft

By Chestermere Community Playschool March 9, 2023

During our Dinosaur Theme, we made "fossils" with a very simple salt dough. (Recipe below)

Most kids love playing with playdough or modelling clay but for some kids, playing with sticky dough is an unpleasant experience. If your child is a sensory avoider, having them help make the dough might ease some of their discomforts. Mixing, rolling and squishing the dough are great hand-strengthening activities. Also, using safety scissors on playdough is a safe and easy way for kids to practice cutting while building muscles used for holding writing utensils.

We have used this easy dough for many projects: Christmas decorations, coins for pirate treasure and now these fossils.

To make our fossils, each student was given a golf ball-sized piece of dough. They used rollers or their hands to flatten the dough. We allowed the kids to choose their favourite dinosaur toy to make imprints. Some students chose to make footprints and some chose to use the dino body for the impression. After letting the fossils dry over the weekend the kids enjoyed painting them. Tempra or acrylic paint would work best.

Recipe:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup table salt
  • 1 cup water

Instructions - mix ingredients together. If the dough is too sticky keep adding a small amount of flour to get the desired consistency. Projects may be air dried (may take a couple of days) or may be dried more quickly (2-3 hours) in an oven set to 250F.
