Intentions vs Resolutions with Harmony Health and Fitness

By Harmony Health and Fitness January 5, 2023

Welcome to 2023! This year is going to be incredible. The past three years have felt unpredictable, overwhelming, and full of adaptation. Let’s use the upcoming year to replenish ourselves, fill up our cups, and intentionally give to us. Give yourself full permission to put yourself first, set some boundaries, and find your flow. You deserve this and everyone around you will benefit from your decision to take care of yourself because you will feel more at peace and more aligned with your authentic self. Take time for rest, for quiet, and for doing the simple things you love. Consider turning down the decisions that don’t serve you. Be loving, forgiving, and caring of yourself. It’s the year to love yourself.

Intentions vs Resolutions

T’is the season for setting New Year’s Resolutions with the hope of creating change for the year to come. A goal or resolution describes what you want to do in the future. It focuses on external accomplishments and is something you can clearly check off a list. While setting goals can motivate you, they can also produce a feeling that your current situation isn’t enough.

A sense of unease can come over you when your decisions don’t align with the resolutions you have set which can create internal turmoil. Studies show that 92% of New Year's resolutions are not fulfilled.  This year, perhaps we should try to set an intention instead. An intention is a guiding principle for who you want to be and how you want to act, live, and show up in this world.

Whether at work, in relationships, in health and spiritual pursuits, or in any other area of your life - an intention serves as an internal compass. It offers a sense of clarity and helps guide your actions as you move throughout the days of the year. An intention can be one word - for example ‘loving’ - that you can use as an internal manual when making decisions. You could ask yourself, do these words align with loving myself?

Instead of saying to ourselves, “I want to work out five days a week” then feeling guilty when we hit the gym twice, we could set our intention as a short mantra like, “I will feel mentally and physically strong’.  Then each time you move your body or mediate, you fuel that intention, create more of that vibe, and feel proud of your accomplishment versus a negative emotion for showing up less than planned.

We all feel enough pressure without being tough on ourselves, let’s let go of resolutions this year and enjoy a short, simple intention that lifts us up and gives us a sense of satisfaction. Enjoy the process, do it with a smile and a sign of relief. Being kind to you as you bring in 2023 sets a beautiful precedent for the year ahead.
