Setting up an obstacle course either inside or outside is a great way to encourage gross motor movements. It's important to include this type of play for kids of all ages. Gross motor (or large motor) skills help kids refine balance, strength and coordination. These types of activities also allow kids to take safe risks which in turn builds confidence.
Be sure to use lots of descriptive and prepositional words when explaining how to move through the course; crawl under the chairs, go over the pile of pillows or walk behind the ironing board, etc.
In the classroom, we have access to lots of different toys and equipment to use, but you can also use supplies from around the house.
