Healthy Habits for Kids: From Handwashing to Staying Home When Sick

By Chestermere Community Playschool February 1, 2024

It doesn't matter if a child is in preschool, kindergarten or big kid school; they can almost always use tips for staying healthy. In our program we use vocabulary like:

  • cough or sneeze into your "chicken wing" (elbow)
  • when washing hands, make bubbles and scrub " Fronts and Backs and In Between, Round and Round and then they're clean"

Each school or program will have their own sick policy. Some of our rules are:

  • the kids wash their hands or use hand sanitiser when they arrive at class;
  • students wash their hands before snack time and always after using a tissue;
  • the teachers give lots of reminders about kids keeping their fingers out of their eyes, mouth and nose;
  • we don't share snacks at school and remind kids not to share water bottles with friends;
  • most importantly, STAY HOME WHEN SICK.

As parents ourselves, we know it's not easy to teach kids how to blow their noses. Here are a few tips:

  • Practice blowing through your nose when you aren't sick;
  • Light a candle, have your kids cover their mouths and try blowing out the flame using their noses;
  • Try blowing nose bubbles in the bathtub.

Another important skill is recognizing signs of sickness in other people. Talk about how we feel when we're sick and how that might look in someone else. Encourage kids to give lots of space to other people who appear to be sick.

This is a great article explaining all the functional skills needed for kids to be able to blow their nose independently from The OT toolbox  https://www.theottoolbox.com/tips-help-kids-learn-how-to-blow-their-nose/

Here is a fun rhyme to help kids remember to cover and then wash!
