Urban Hen Workshop - Register Now

By RVC Ag Society March 21, 2024

Are you interested in keeping backyard chickens? Do you want to learn more about flock health, handling, cost, by-laws, breeds, coop design, diseases, overwintering and more?

Then the Introduction to Backyard Chicken workshop is for you! This 2-hour workshop will cover the basics and the necessities when it comes to owning and raising backyard chickens.

Raising backyard chickens and similar fowl can be a rewarding experience for families. Beyond the joy of watching these charming feathered friends roam freely, there are numerous benefits to be gained from this wholesome activity. Firstly, tending to these animals instils a sense of responsibility in children, teaching them important values like compassion, empathy, and commitment as they care for the birds' well-being. It also offers an excellent opportunity for hands-on learning about biology, agriculture, and the circle of life. Moreover, the fresh eggs produced serve as a nutritious and sustainable food source, promoting a healthier lifestyle for the whole family.

Being around backyard fowl may also have a calming and therapeutic effect, reducing stress and encouraging outdoor activity and bonding time. By nurturing these gentle creatures, families can create lasting memories and strengthen their bonds, fostering a deeper connection with nature and a sense of self-sufficiency. Raising backyard fowl is a heartwarming and enriching experience that brings families joy, knowledge, and togetherness.

Chestermere residents are allowed to keep up to a maximum of six residential poultry pets, such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese. Roosters are not allowed, and all poultry pets must be at least four months old to ensure they are female.
