Process-Focused Art with the Chestermere Playschool

By Chestermere Community Playschool April 27, 2023

This week at our craft table we had “Process-Focused Art!” All of our students love when we have this option during Centre time.

This type of art activity focuses on the experience and exploration of techniques, tools, and materials. It develops creativity and problem-solving skills, improves confidence, strengthens fine motor, and lets them try new things and experiment with a variety of materials.

A few things to remember when setting up the art environment:

  • There is no right or wrong way to explore and create
  • Approach process-focused art like open-ended play. Let the child lead the art experience
  • There are no step-by-step instructions or a sample to follow
  • Provide a variety of different materials, glue, scissors, colours, etc.
  • This type of art is often messy

Some suggestions to get started:

  • Painting or colouring on blank paper
  • Make a collage - provide paper, magazines, flyers, ribbon, googly eyes, scissors, and glue
  • Box construction - provide a box and colours

For our art centre, we put out some blank paper, pre-cut Easter shapes, a container of random pieces of paper and ribbon, punches, crayons, scissors, and glue sticks. Each project turned out differently! This is a great low-prep activity you can do with any craft supplies or found objects around the house. Don't want to deal with the mess? Bring the art activity outside! Gather leaves, sticks, rocks, chalk, etc. and create on the sidewalk or grass.

Here are a few books we love about having fun with art:

  • Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg,
  • Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson,
  • I Ain't Gonna Paint No More by Leo Lionni and.
  • Mix It Up by Herve Tullet

Have fun creating!
