Since January 26, 2023, the Chestermere Public Library is no longer charging late fines! Patrons will not be charged for bringing books back late, and have had their existing late fines waived. The library is very happy to remove what can be a significant barrier to service for some patrons, especially for people who depend on the library because of their financial situation.
Removing fines brings the library in line with other libraries that have stopped assessing fines over the last few years, including New York, Toronto, Chicago, Boston, Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge, and local libraries like Cochrane, Okotoks and Strathmore. Many libraries that have forgone late fees found that wait times on items are not affected, they have a return of patrons who have been avoiding the library because of fines they can’t pay, and even have a noticeable increase in returns of books previously marked missing. Patrons will still be charged for lost or damaged books.
Did you know? Library cards are also FREE!
Want to give back? Consider donating your library card fee to the library. By donating, you allow the library to buy new materials, run more programs, add additional staffing hours and much more.
