The Mitten Craft with the Chestermere Playschool

Using the Book 'The Mitten' by Jan Brett

By Chestermere Community Playschool December 15, 2022

In our classroom, we love to find books that go with our monthly themes. Our December theme is Winter and Holidays. This week we read the book The Mitten by Jan Brett. This book has beautiful illustrations with special details that the kids love to search for. During craft time we made a cutting, colouring, and glueing craft. There are many benefits to allowing young children to practice cutting with scissors; for example hand strengthening, visual-motor skills (eye-hand coordination), and bilateral (two-handed) coordination skills.

Each child was given a mitten image as well as a sheet with all the animals from the story (click here for sheet 1 and sheet 2). For early cutters use a highlighter or felt pen to circle the animals as a guide for cutting. Remember to use one hand for cutting and the other hand to help hold the paper. It's normal for preschool-aged kids to switch hands while cutting, encourage them to finish the task with the hand they begin with.

Next, have the kids colour all the animals. Finally, they can glue their pictures onto the mitten. After they are finished, see if the kids can remember the sequence of the animals going into the mitten from the story. What animal was first? What happened when the last animal went inside the mitten?

Registrations for the 2022/23 school year are still being accepted. The Chestermere Community Playschool is excited to participate in the new Affordability Grant and subsidy program, making quality, play-based preschool more accessible to all the families in Chestermere.

You may always find more information about their program, teachers, subsidies, and registration on their website.
