It's officially fall! This year, the autumnal equinox brought the fall season to the Northern Hemisphere on September 22 at 10:29 P.M. EDT.
With the changing season comes the opportunity for lots of fun seasonal family activities. We've got a few ideas for a "must do" list that we think your family will F-A-L-L for!
F - Football Watching! Sure, you may not be a "sports" family, but wouldn't it be fun to fill a thermos full of hot chocolate, put on some hoodies and pack a few blankets to sit in the bleachers to watch a game? It's a great way to get involved in your community by supporting Chestermere High School's team who have a game this Friday at 7:00 pm against Cochrane. Go Lakers!
A - Apple & Pumpkin Picking! Nothing says fall more than apples and pumpkins. Find a "pick your own" orchard or pumpkin farm and stock up on both for yummy treats and holiday decorations. Apples make great pies, breads and sauces and pumpkins can be carved, painted and stacked to bring a little fall to your front porch.
L - Leaf Pile Jumping! Admit it, even as a parent, you love to jump in the leaves! Make a big pile in your backyard or at the park. We bet the kids will be even more willing to help pile leaves once they know that there's jumping at the end. And wouldn't a family jump into a pile of leaves make a great holiday card picture? Bring a friend or a photographer to capture the moment. You'll be glad you did.
L - Let the slow cooker handle dinner! After your days of watching football, picking apples and pumpkins and jumping in leaves, you'll be ready for a good, old-fashioned comfort meal. Fall is a great time to pull out the slow cooker. While you're out enjoying the changing colours and cooler temperatures, dinner is preparing itself!
One of our favourite slow cooker meals is pulled pork sandwiches. Just place a 2-3 pound pork roast in the slow cooker with a full bottle of your favourite barbecue sauce. Cook on low all day (8-10 hours). When you are ready to eat, shred the meat with two forks and serve on hamburger buns with coleslaw and pickles. It's the perfect end to a perfect fall day!
What about you? What other fall activities would you add to the list?
