I help expecting families gain confidence throughout their pregnancy, birth and newborn journey. I teach childbirth and parenting classes and also offer both birth and postpartum doula services.
What inspired or encouraged you to start this business?
I originally became a doula with the end goal of becoming a midwife, however, I quickly realized that my heart was more pulled to be a support person rather than in a medical role. I've always loved babies and I'm naturally a nurturer, so this is the perfect mix for birth work.
What was the most difficult part of starting your business?
The opportunities for mentorship within my field are very limited by hospital policies. I prefer to learn by in-person demonstration which was nearly impossible.
How do you balance work and family life?
Being on call is very limiting and I have to be ready to go on a moment's notice. That has meant missing my son's birthday party or championship hockey game, supporting a family on Christmas Day or sleeping all day after an all-nighter. I know these occasional sacrifices balance out with my ability to be at home and present most of the time. I much prefer this to a 40-hour workweek in an office somewhere.
What do you love most about your business?
I love seeing the relief on the faces of parents when I've taught them strategies to cope with labour, or techniques to soothe their newborn.
What do you do to take care of YOU?
I schedule a daily walk which gets me some exercise, fresh air and time with friends.
What is your favourite thing to do with your kids or family in the local area?
I love all our community events like the fairs, Canada Day celebrations, etc.
Do you have any advice to give other super moms?
Be yourself. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks of you. Life is too short, don't take on things that make you miserable, just say no! It's okay to not be okay.
