Pollinators, Birds and Urban Wildlife: Science Literacy Week Programs

Science literacy week is September 22-26, 2020. Register today for these virtual or in-person sessions brought to you by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) and the Chestermere Public Library.

Virtual Sessions 

  • Pollinators 101 (ages 7+)  Tuesday, September 22 @ 6:30 - 7:30 pm 
    • This beginner's course will teach about how citizen science and technology can connect you with nature, science and help save our planet! We will be focusing on delivering a fun and education workshop around the theme of pollinators. Leaving you with the tools that you need to become a certified pollinator citizen scientist. The YYC Young Citizen Scientists program inspires participants to take environmental action, knowing that their actions make a real-world difference. 
  •  Birds 101 (ages 7+)  Wednesday, September 23 @ 6:30 - 7:30 pm 
    • This beginner's course will teach about how citizen science and technology can connect you with nature, science and help save our planet! We will be focusing on delivering a fun and education workshop around the theme of birds. Leaving you with the tools that you need to become a certified birding citizen scientist. The YYC Young Citizen Scientists program inspires participants to take environmental action, knowing that their actions make a real-world difference.  
  • Urban Wildlife 101 (ages 12+) Thursday, September 24 @ 6:30 - 7:30 pm 
    • Age range: 12+ (family-friendly) This beginner's course will teach about how citizen science and technology can connect you with nature, science and help save our planet! We will be focusing on delivering a fun and education workshop around the theme of urban wildlife. Leaving you with the tools that you need to become a certified urban wildlife citizen scientist. The YYC Young Citizen Scientists program inspires participants to take environmental action, knowing that their actions make a real-world difference.

 Community Walks

  • Pollinators Community Walk (ages 7+)  Friday, September 25 @ 3:00 - 4:00 pm - 
    • Age range: 7+ This introductory outing will guide you through how using technology can build science skills, connect you with nature and make you a citizen scientist! During our fun and interactive program, you will learn how to use citizen science applications, identify local pollinators and connect with your family and friends during this great outdoor activity! The YYC Young Citizen Scientists program inspires participants to take environmental action, knowing that their actions make a real-world difference.  Participants are asked to bring their own binoculars. However, a limited (sanitized) supply will be provided by CPAWS as well. Participants are recommended to bring their smartphones and have the choice to download and create an account with the following citizen science applications prior to the program for extra fun!   • Birds Community Walk (ages 7+)  Saturday, September 26 @ 10:00 - 11:00 am 
    • Age range: 7+ This introductory outing will guide you through how using technology can build science skills, connect you with nature and make you a citizen scientist! During our fun and interactive program, you will learn how to use citizen science applications, identify local birds and connect with your family and friends during this great outdoor activity! The YYC Young Citizen Scientists program inspires participants to take environmental action, knowing that their actions make a real-world difference.  Participants are asked to bring their own binoculars.
