Learn About Your Child's Development

Developmental Screening (0-6 years of age)

By Parent & Caregiver Support Services (PCSS) May 28, 2020

What is an Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ)?

Ages & Questionnaires® (ASQ) are the most widely used developmental and social-emotional screening tools for children birth to age 6. These easy-to-use, parent-completed questionnaires provide a quick and reliable snapshot of your child’s motor, cognitive, language, and social-emotional skills.

Why should parents complete an ASQ?

We know that the first five years of a child's life are the most formative years in the human lifespan. From birth to age 5, a child’s brain develops more than at any other time in life. And early brain development has a lasting impact on a child’s ability to learn and succeed in school and life. Developmental screening is an opportunity for parents to check their child’s development and address any potential concerns with the help of resources, and helping professionals. Research shows that children who receive early treatment for developmental delays are more likely to graduate from high school, hold jobs, live independently, and avoid teen pregnancy, criminal behaviour, and violent crime.

How do I complete one?

You can complete a free online Ages & Stages Questionnaire in the comfort of your own home, on your computer or smartphone. Contact the Chestermere Parent & Caregiver Support Services (PCSS)(403) 207-7050 or pcssinfo@chestermere.ca

What happens after I have completed an ASQ?

After you have completed the ASQ we will score it, and share the results with you via phone or email and discuss. If your child is developing without concerns, there won’t be specific follow-up steps—just keep playing and interacting with your child as they grow and reach new milestones. If your child has trouble with some skills, your program will help you with next steps, including a possible referral for more assessment. Whether or not there are concerns, you will also receive some fun and easy ASQ learning activities to try with your child before the next screening.
