How to Make Mermaid Popcorn

Customize for any theme!

Popcorn is a great take-home treat in place of the traditional birthday party goody bag. This year, I made mermaid popcorn to keep with my daughter's birthday theme. It is super simple and the kids love it.

You need:

Popcorn - any kind! This time I used popcorn I popped myself, but a giant bag from Costco would work just as well.
Wilton Candy Melts, vanilla - One 12 oz bag was enough for 12 treat bags.
Wilton Gel Colours - I like the colour intensity from gel colours. But regular food colouring would work as well.
Sprinkles - lots of sprinkles!

Cover several baking trays in parchment paper (easier clean up) and spread popcorn out in an even layer on the trays. In a microwaveable bowl melt the candy melts and then add your choice of food colouring (I made mine a . Mix well to ensure the melts are fully melted and the colour is mixed thoroughly.

Drizzle the melted popcorn over the popcorn. I add just enough for colour, but not enough to cover every piece of popcorn. Cover with sprinkles before the chocolate has a chance to harden. I used blue sparkle sprinkles, but use your imagination. A rainbow of sparkles would make unicorn popcorn!

Once the chocolate has dried, scoop your Mermaid popcorn into treat bags. Top with a bit more sprinkles, and, for added fun add a few gold fish!
