What is Pretty in Pink?
Pretty in Pink is a campaign presented by YELL (Youth Encouraging Lasting Leadership) each February in support of anti-bullying. Throughout the month, YELL sells pink buttons for a suggested donation to raise awareness for the cause. Half of the proceeds are donated to a charity of YELL’s choice – Dare to Care – that supports anti-bullying, and the other half go toward supporting YELL initiatives. Pretty in Pink leads up to Pink Day on February 28th, on which the buttons and/or a pink shirt can be worn to show support.
Why does YELL sell buttons?
Pink Day (historically known as Pink Shirt Day) is a nationally recognized day to support anti-bullying by promoting kindness and taking a stand. However, not everyone may own a pink shirt, and there have been instances in the past of students getting bullied for NOT wearing a pink shirt. Youth Council decided to create buttons to be sold in the community that can be worn in addition to or instead of a pink shirt on Pink Day (and for the entire month!). This year, the Alberta Red Cross Pink Day theme is “Be Someone’s Hero”, with a special focus on the prevalence of cyber-bullying.
About Dare to Care
Founded in Calgary, Dare to Care was one of the first programs in Canada established to tackle the issue of bullying. This organization is focused on anti-bullying education through programs in schools, as well as support and education for parents, and professional development for teachers and staff. Dare to Care’s mandate to encourage entire communities to stand up and take action against bullying is perfectly aligned with the values of Pretty in Pink, so it was chosen by YELL to receive half of this year’s button proceeds.
