Read for 15 on January 27th & Family Literacy Day

Read for 15 minutes and then let the library know

By Chestermere Public Library January 23, 2020

The Chestermere Public Library and the Kidz 1st Network Parent Link Centre invite you to celebrate Literacy Day on Monday, January 27th from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm. Stop by the library where families will learn about the importance of early literacy with plenty of fun songs, activities, and games to enjoy with your child.

If you can't make it to the library, you can still celebrate Literacy Day by reading for 15 minutes on January 27th, and telling the library about it!

Libraries across Alberta are reaching out to encourage citizens to read for 15 minutes on January 27th to win the title of Alberta's most 'readerly' community for Family Literacy Day. Chestermere Public Library has once again joined the Read for 15 challenge and the goal is to highlight the importance of literacy and promote reading in the community.

Literacy skills are put into practice daily: reading grocery lists, your Facebook newsfeed, the local paper, a book, traffic signs, maps, or even a restaurant menu. Continuously flexing your reading muscles has been proven to reduce stress, expand vocabulary, improve memory, focus and concentration, and develop deep analytical thinking. It's a rewarding recreational activity too.

Participation is easy. After you finish your 15 minutes of reading, let the Library know using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, online, email, phone, or stop by the Library and we'll make sure your reading is added to the tally. You can follow participation and report your reading by using the hashtag #readfor15Chestermere.

About Read for 15: The Read for 15 challenge originated in the Northwest Territories and has been promoting literacy since 1987. It was created by the NWT Literacy Council.
