Calgary International Children’s Festival celebrates 30 years

Calgary, AB –  Southern Alberta’s premiere children’s festival, The Calgary International Children’s Festival (Calgary Kidsfest) celebrates 30 years! The festival takes over Arts Commons and Olympic Plaza from May 25-28, 2016 with performances for all ages, and a host of fun, free outdoor concerts and activities.

The Festival’s anniversary year features a legacy-inspired lineup including Canadian music icon Fred Penner; the Calgary debut ofMorgan’s JourneyCanada’s longest-running play; and YYC’s own Zoo Dance, inspired by the 2013 Alberta flood.  We explore cultures far and wide with The Dakhká Khwáan Dancers and Aché Brasil which showcase Tlingit culture and Brazil’s Capoeira dance respectively. Television favourites are represented with TreehouseTV’s Splash ‘N Boots (nominated for a 2016 JUNO Award). And the festival expands to include science-based programming, with Doktor Kaboom’s Electricity Tour and the Ugly Animal Roadshow with UK personality Simon Watt.

The free outdoor festivities take place every day during the festival, and include: clownsmusical performancesroving artists, acomic labstorytelling sessionsbarn dancingBollywood workshops, and more!

“This festival has reached a really exciting point where children who grew up with the festival can now share it with their own kids,” says festival programmer Christy Offer. “While Kidsfest has evolved with its community over the years, it has always featured world-class performers dedicated to inspiring young minds and been committed to empowering children through the arts.”
