Simple Cork Sailboat

By Laura Miller January 28, 2016

My kids really miss playing in water this time of year. I can tell because they want to stay in the tub longer than usual and tend to linger at the sink when washing hands. Instead of risking the kids being tempted to use up all of the soap, we made cork sailboats to float around the sink and tub. They are easy and fast to make, but provide hours of water fun.

What you need:

  • Three corks (all the same size works best)
  • Three rubber bands
  • Toothpick
  • Foam triangle
  • Optional: Small ball of modeling clay or other topper for the toothpick point
What you do:
  1. Wrap the first rubber band around the center of the corks.
  2. Wrap the second and third rubber bands around the outer edges of the corks, spacing them evenly.
  3. Poke the toothpick into the center of the middle cork to make a hole, then remove the toothpick.
  4. Poke the toothpick through the bottom center of the foam sail, then through the top near the point.
  5. Put the toothpick back in the hole in the cork. If using a protective cover for the point of the toothpick, add it before giving it to the child to play.
